In 2009 I took it upon Myself to rebuild the soda kiln at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  I have been involved in the building of other kilns but this is the first time that I had built one by myself from start to finish.  I had made some design modifications from the previous kiln such as increasing the number of spy/soda ports and changing the chamber dimensions.  The kiln was built using a combination of used brick salvaged from the old kiln and second bricks that the school had on hand.  The entire kiln was dry stacked (no mortar was used) and I enlisted the help of Josh Goss ,who was a Graduate student in the Blacksmithing program at the time, to modify the metal support structure.  This kiln is a pseudo downdraft design with a sprung arch.  The following are some pictures of the kiln being built.  All of the work that is in my gallery was fired in this kiln.  Enjoy!
